amazing year. BIRTH OF PASTORAL DEAD....(weather report, eyes, miss 1/2, stella and china doll) all the tunes took on a breezy, tall grass flavor.....maybe it hadn't gone to the hard drugs yet and the boys were feeling that way, arrived at the garden really....there's a reason DANE is NO 1 on the ARCHIVE

many long shows. a pinnacle year with a unique personality, like all the years 67-?....well that's open to debate now idnt it?

try this, did you know they had horns for some shows?:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd73-09-15.aud-sbd.cotsman.16174.sbeok.shnf

and this...this is the pastoral biz:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd73-03-22.sbd.sacks.1822.sbeok.shnf

playin, eyes, dark star, the other one, china doll, stella blue, weather report suite, here comes sunshine ALL ARE in frequent rotation......

did i mention the LONG SETS....many songs played....your imagination runs wild reading a 73 set list.....you look at most sets post 80...and you just need to flip the page back to 73.....

us blues was still WAVE THAT FLAG....oh and OOOOHH i just hit on this AUD....sounds good so far....amazing LIQUID PLAYIN....like all of em in good ol 73:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd73-07-01.aud.lai.178.sbefail.shnf

oh...and according to DEADBASE they played 72 shows that year.....was there a cancellation?

1973 is (was) one of my favorite years/

Not the GD, I mean the year. I had a great time.

The only GD show I saw that year (that I can recall) was the Cow Palace - debut of the monster wall of speakers.

But, I was nowhere near the stage, and there was no big screen in those days.

I was with my girlfriend Kathy Anderson (Andersen?) - the gal I shoulda married.

We sat there in the first row bleachers, enjoyed it, and I can't remember a thing today about the show itself.

But, a friend was down in front at that show...

and he told me later, that Garcia had tears in his eyes when he sang "Morning Dew".

I think Jerry missed Pigpen. But life goes on.

I believe Pigpen would have kept Jerry off the h.

But there were still a few good years left for the GD, for u, for me, but if u ask me, if God has an iPod, it's not 1973 He's listening to.

It's 1966.
It's always 1966.

If there's a heaven, it must be 1969.
That was the year.

This is the year.

Forget it.

It's over before it began.

It never ends...

(me in '73)

I particularly love the Loose Lucy from 7/1. '73 is my favorite year for Loose Lucy, when it was slower and more 'burlesque.'

Also, if anyone hasn't done himself the favor of listening to 4/2/73, do check it out. Sunshine > Space > Bobby McGee is just the icing.

Man, I could go on and on and on and on about this year. But can you blame one?

you will not be blamed....

it is the apex year of all that they had been trying to do since they began to move away from the tight song sets and heavy blues/psych jams of the 70-71 country years.....you can hear all they had been trying to do since the BEGINNING come together SEEMLESSLY in 73

a unique rootsy psychedlia -- or, pastoral dead, my pref.
